Welcome to Avanti (abi) – specialised acquired brain injury rehabilitation services in St. Leonards-on-Sea.

Update February 2021

I would like to congratulate you all for the way that you have coped and adapted to the restrictions and new way of living with the pandemic and for maintaining your rehabilitation. I thought I would update you with information about what we have been doing over the past year.

In line with government guidelines regarding social distancing and to protect all of our clients, staff and their families, we closed Avanti doors with effect from close of business on Friday 20th March 2020. Whilst we hoped that the closure would be relatively short, here we are a year later and still not able to operate in house services.

We have been able to maintain a good level of rehabilitation and support to all clients throughout the centre closure, offering home-based support on a one to one basis using telephone/Facetime/WhatsApp and zoom sessions.  This has been hugely successful over the past year and has shown us what is possible. There have been some amazing positive outcomes as a result of this enforced change to our way of working that we intend to incorporate into our future way of working.

We have been running a full program including group sessions on Zoom, 1:1 virtual physiotherapy sessions, cognitive rehabilitation, SaLT, OT sessions, rehabilitation and fitness therapy, neuropsychology and NLP sessions as well as regular and stimulating individual calls to maintain mental wellbeing. When not in lockdown these 1:1 sessions have taken place face to face using full COVID precautions. Additionally, when possible, we have been able to organise outdoor walking therapy and walk and talk sessions.

Current online group sessions include communication groups, cognitive rehabilitation groups, discussion groups, special interest women’s and men’s groups, mindstretchers, tai-chi, quizzes, self-esteem groups, debating group,

We have been busy making contingency alterations to our space and working procedures at Avanti in the hope that we will be in a better position to maintain a level of face to face therapeutic input at the centre, even in the event of any potential future lockdown periods. These alterations will also mean that we will be able to operate more safely and with less close physical contact once we are able to open the doors to clients once again. We have created new covered outdoor areas, pathways around the garden, an outdoor fitness area with outdoor gym equipment and an indoor fitness room with a good range of accessible gym equipment which frees up more space in the house to spread our clients out over a wider area. We are introducing methods of ensuring that everyone entering the house is healthy as well as sanitising stations and COVID safe working practices.

We will be operating a shorter day in the centre with fewer clients each day. This will mean that clients will have the benefit of a combination of centre-based and home-based sessions. This will reduce exposure time and increase opportunities for more community based rehabilitation.

Please be assured that we are doing everything that we can to keep you safe and to avoid the spread of the virus. By working together with us and with the rest of the country, we are hopeful that we can all come through this very difficult time unscathed.

Stay well, keep washing your hands, wear face coverings, make space.

Ella x (Avanti (abi) manager).
